Do you know that weird feeling in your stomach when you don’t want to do something unfamiliar?
I recently re-read an article by Lawrence Yeo which discusses the importance of “taking the leap”. In his article, he emphasises the unimaginable potential that comes with it.
Taking the leap is essentially a fancier phrase for taking (calculated) risks.
I very much resonated with the article. Proactively getting out of my comfort zone has to be one of the best changes I’ve made.
For instance, I’ve never been a big fan of rollercoasters. Last week, I visited an amusement park with my school class. While I didn’t feel quite comfortable with the idea, I decided to get on the biggest rollercoaster in the park anyway. Sure, I could have passed out or thrown up – but I didn’t.
In fact, it was quite the opposite. It actually turned out to be one of my favourite things I’ve done in a while. 🥳
This analogy can be applied to literally all parts of life.
→ That new hobby you want to explore? Give it a try.
→ That one girl you’ve been thinking about? Ask her out.
→ That YouTube channel you’ve dreamed of starting? Record your first video.
What’s the worst that could happen?
As Yeo puts it, “while you can easily predict the concerns of making any leap, there is no way to predict the numerous rewards that await you on the other side”.
Leaving your comfort zone gets you further in life. It means progress. So, next time you have that feeling in your stomach – just take the leap. It probably won’t be that bad. 🙌
